(Brain. My own work. Sketche, 2010)

The brain is a organ of the nervous system. In human, is in the head, protected by the skull.
The mind, the brain, the subconscious, the fantasy, the dreams,... Everything is a big mysterious. When I'm dreaming, is like imagine everything I want or everything which scares me... But a dream is something big, a award that you need to follow for win it.
The brain is the most amazing machine. The machine which move my life and my dreams. The head is the place where my dreams lives. You can find there all my monsters, fairies, angels and demons... do you want to see?

("Calvin & Hobbes". Bill Watterson. 1985-1995)

{"Calvin & Hobbes" is a humor comik-book created and written by Bill Watterson. Is the Story of a imaginative 6 years old kid, Calvin, and his tiger, Hobbes.}
My first referent. Always, the most important. Without words. Only, the perfect work, an amazing inspiration to the stories about childhood and the kid's imagination.
For me is very important because I was reading this comic-book everyday when I was a kid. I discovered it thanks to my uncle, an sculptor artist, who gave me the first volume when I was 7 years old.
The last story, a door open. Because Calvin & Hobbes will live always in my heart.

("Nothing is forgotten". Ryan A.)

{"Nothing is forgotten" is a webcomic made by Ryan A. Is a mix between black pen drawings, watercolour and photoshop. The story is about one kid who lost his father and is scared about loneliness and a strange creature that lives near to his house.}
Today, looking the facebook of one classmate from Spain, I discovered a webcomic very good. Is called “Nothing is forgotten”, and is a watercolour work, in black and white, that is amazing!
The other day I was thinking about the kind of materials I'll use to make the illustrations, now, I'm sure that I would like to try to do something similar, in black, blue and red.
Really incredible this work. Today was successful!

("Little Nemo in Slumberland". Winsor McCay. 1905-1911)
{"Little Nemo in Slumberland", created by Winsor McCay, is a important comic-book, a referent for the new drawings like Peanuts or Calvin&Hobbes. Nemo is a little kid who every night dreams and lives in a fantastic world, in the slumberland. The king is Morfeo, name of the dream's world.}
The most important discovery of this year was 'Little Nemo in Slumberland', an amazing comic-book.

Little Nemo is the story that I was searching all my life. One little kid, with a very big imagination, living in a fantastic world: dream's world. The only thing that can destroy his dreams is when he wakes up.
Winsor McCay made a perfect art work, that inspired to big drawers like Bill Watterson o Charles M- Schulz (creators of 'Calvin & Hobbes' and 'Peanuts'). And now is a big inspiration for my work, because I think that the structure of the stories, like the stories of 'Calvin & Hobbes' (when Calvin is dreaming or thinking in a fiction world) can work in my project.

(Reference): Inception, the movie

("Inception". Christopher Nolan. 2010)
{"Inception". Directed and written by Christopher Nolan. A film about the secrets of the dreams and the people's subconscious. About a criminal, Dom Cobb, who can enter in the people's dreams and try to put or steal ideas. The main actores are Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard.}
When I saw Inception by first time, I liked all the story about the dreams, the subconscious of the people and the power of the ideas. But after see it five times more, you can find more in that movie.
The dreams like mazes that one architect built it; if you're in a dream during a long time, you can't feel the difference between the real and the unreal; the dreams appears always real; you don't remember the beginning of a dream. All this things help me  to understand the power of the dreams.
Is now when I decide to make a fantastic world like a maze, where the main character will walks searching and understanding him-self.

Idea: Do a graphic novel about one kid and his two worlds (real and fiction).
Story: One kid will be the main character. He's going to be the center of the story, and everything that happens in his life: each day in home, in the school, with his parents, teachers, friends,...
One normal shy and little kid, has inside of him other fiction world (dream world) with differents creatures.
Each creature is a representation of one of his feelings (love, fear, doubts, anger, wrath, sadness, loneliness,...), and they can be of two colours: red or blue. Red are the strongest and more powerful creatures. Blue are the pasive creatures, who follow the kid and don't help him (because they are scared). Later, the kid evolve and win his fears with the help of the blue creatures. Finally He'll get the happiness.
Style: Like a graphic novel or comic-book, with the comic-book's classic style. In pen and coloured with photoshop, in black and white with some red and blue.
Process: Do a big work of documentation, sketching and studying the characters and backgrounds. Write the story and make 50 final pages, like a normal comic-book.

About my self: a dreamer

lunes, 24 de enero de 2011

My name is Jose Mª Martínez Valero. I'm 22 years old and I'm a fine arts student from Valencia, in the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV). Now I'm studying like a exchange student in Southampton, in the Southampton Solent University.

My subject here is Illustration, and I'm in my last year. Now, I'm working in this final project, that is my final work to finish my career. Like I'm a graphic novel fan, I would like to do one for my last work.

My work is center in Illustration and graphic design. I was working in a innership in Aureka S.L., so I have a good digital skills and knowledge about design.

When I was younger, I had a dream. A dream about one child and his dreams. When I was child, every day I have wanted to make real this story, to writte and draw it. But until now, I didn't have the enough energy, time and experience to try it. Now, I will try it, and this is the exis of my final project: make a graphic story (novel) about a kid and his fiction world. Now, it's the time to do it.

About the presentation document

domingo, 23 de enero de 2011
The presentation document is a part of the lecture Final Major Project of 3rd of B.A. Illustration, in the Southampton Solent University. Is a part of the final mark and is like a reflective diary of the final project and the process of make it.
I chose the weblog format because usually I read some weblogs very interesting, and for me the computer is a very important tool to work every day. So, I prefer it to put different images, referents and is easier for me to write on computer than on notebook.
Here you can read every step of my project, my reflections, the referents that I have to work, my ideas, how I would like to do them, and everything related with this project.

Welcome to my final project reflective diary. My name is Chema Martínez, and I'm a illustration student in the Southampton Solent University, of 3rd year
I'm from Valencia (Spain). I'm studying there Fine Arts, my final year (fifth year), but now I'm living in Southampton, like a exchange student.
In 3rd, we need to do like final work a final project, with freedom to choose what and how we'll do it. My choice was a short graphic novel about a story I liked: one little kid and his worlds (one fiction and other real). We have approximately three months to do it and to do other stuff like this presentation documentation (a kind of diary about my work, with the evolution and reflections).
For me, this work is a good and exciting project, because I'll do one work I have dreamed to do all my life.
